Europe routes: rail, road and island trips

Europe makes multi-country trips easy and coverage assumptions risky. Start with the route, then check every country by name.

A traveller at a mountain railway station

Europe is where most travellers first try a multi-country eSIM, because borders are easy to cross and a week can take in three or four countries. That ease hides the main planning risk: assuming that “Europe” means the same thing to every plan. The EU, the EEA, the Schengen area and a seller's “Europe” list are four different groups of countries.

The guides here start from the route. List each country in order, mark the ones outside the EU (Switzerland, the UK, the Western Balkans, Turkey), and check each by name against the plan's published list. Then match validity to the whole trip, not just the days you travel.

If you are crossing water, see the ferries hub as well; if you are driving, our land border guide explains what the phone does at each frontier.

Quick answers

Does a Europe eSIM cover Switzerland and the UK?

Often, not always. Both are outside the EU, so check each by name on the plan's list.

Is Schengen the same as Europe eSIM coverage?

No. Schengen is a border-control area. A plan covers whatever countries its seller lists.

One regional plan or country plans?

Regional for three or more countries with days spread out; country plans when one country takes most of the trip.
